New "Korean Studies LibGuide" and Korean Romanization brochures

Dear Korean Studies materials users,

The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library is pleased to announce that the Korean Studies LibGuide and new Korean Romanization brochures are now available for our users.

In 2009, the Library of Congress made revisions to the McCune-Reischauer Romanization and word division system for Korean. As many library users are unaware that this directly affects how one searches in the library catalogue, the Korean Studies LibGuide was created in order to assist our faculty and students with Korean Romanization. Further additions will be posted as completed.

Below is the link to the Korean Studies LibGuide: http://guides.library.utoronto.ca/koreanstudies

(Note: What is a LibGuide? Libguides are online web pages created by librarians to help patrons perform various tasks, such as using library resources or doing research.)

Under the Korean Romanization tab, you will find a list of new brochures and guides available to patrons for more assistance with the Korean Romanization and Word Division rules.

Brochure 1 Title: Korean Romanization and Word Division (Basic Guide)

This brochure outlines the basic rules of Korean Romanization and Word Division for patrons who are less familiar with or new to the Korean Romanization system.

Brochure 2 Title: Tutorial on How to Use “The Korean Romanization & Word Division (Basic Guide)”

This tutorial is prepared for new users of Korean materials to demonstrate to them use of the Korean Romanization system in a step-by-step fashion. Some practice exercises are included.

Brochure 3 Title: Korean Romanization System and Word Division (Advanced Guide)

This brochure outlines further rules of the Korean Romanization system and word division in detail for patrons who are already familiar with the Korean Romanization system, and especially for those who are unfamiliar with the recent revision (2009) on Korean Romanization by the Library of Congress. An additional table on Romanization of the double consonants has been added for greater clarity.

Brochure 4 Title: Tutorial on Using Korean Romanization to Search in the University of Toronto Library (UTL) Catalogue

This guide aims to assist patrons with using the U of T Library catalogue to find Korean Studies material. Various search tips are introduced such as title/author search, keyword search and subject search.

Note: This Guide can be found in the sub-section “How to Find Korean Studies Materials” which appears on the left of the screen when you click on the ‘Korean Romanization’ tab.

Hard copies of these brochures are also available in the East Asian Library at the brochure table beside the Reference Desk.

Best wishes,

Hana Kim

Korea Studies Librarian
